Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka expressed deep pride in representing Nigeria as he prepares for his second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka, preparing for his second Afcon with Nigeria, expressed a deep sense of pride in representing his country.

Despite acknowledging the difficulties of re-adjusting to club football after the tournament, the 25-year-old stressed the honour of playing for the national team.

His perspective highlights the personal and national pride that comes with representing one's country on a significant international stage.

What Onyeka said

"I'll always want to represent my country on the big stage. It's an honour to wear the green and white shirt, so it's something that I have to do," he told BBC Sport Africa.

"I was a boy playing in the streets of Nigeria and now I'm representing the Super Eagles at Afcon.

"It is a dream come true, because after watching AFCON Legends in past years, now you're going to be part of the team. I'm looking forward to it so much."

Onyeka's comments come at a critical time as the AFCON tournament approaches, bringing with them the usual dilemmas for players, clubs, and national teams alike.

This scenario often sees clubs reluctant to release key players for international duty, fearing the impact of their absence on crucial domestic and continental campaigns.

On the other hand, players face the patriotic pull of representing their nations in a prestigious tournament, which is a source of immense national pride and a platform for showcasing their talents on an international stage.
