Nigerian icon backs youthful Super Eagles to shine at AFCON, urges patience

Nigeria Super Eagles are looking to end a 10-year wait for the AFCON title in Cote d'Ivoire.

Former Super Eagles assistant coach Emmanuel Amuneke believes that there are reasons for Nigerian fans to be excited about ahead of the nation’s potential.

 Amuneke stated in an interview that Nigeria's senior national team, the Super Eagles, have successfully integrated some promising young players who have come through the ranks.

"I think we have young promises that we have been able to develop from the youth level," Amuneke said to Tribal Football.

"I think this is a positive aspect regarding Nigerian football that we have seen these young players develop from the youngest age through now to playing in the first team."

Amuneke, a former AFCON winner and African Footballer of the Year listed players like Victor Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, and Joe Aribo as examples of talents breaking into the senior national team.

But the former Tanzania boss was quick to caution the fans, stressing that success will require improvement across the board.

"But still, we are well aware that football success doesn't come only from this, but you have to get better also in other aspects,"

With the Super Eagles set to battle the rest of Africa at the AFCON2023, Amuneke added that the young Eagles could bring surprises to Ivory Coast while calling for patience.

"I can say for sure we have a promising young team,” he added. “But we have to give them and create for them all the opportunities necessary to express themselves as best as they can.

"For some time now we have been introducing a new generation of players and we need to have some patience so they can get better," he concluded.

Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro named a 40-man provisional squad for AFCON, with Osimhen, Aribo, and Calvin Bassey making the list.
