The Spanish shot-stopper was dismissed just four minutes into the match after rushing out of his penalty area and fouling United forward Bryan Mbeumo in a last-man challenge.

Referee Peter Bankes wasted no time in producing a straight red card, leaving Chelsea with a mountain to climb at Old Trafford.

Maresca forced into early changes

The early dismissal forced Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca into three quick substitutions to reorganise his team. United capitalised on their numerical advantage, scoring twice to establish a 2-0 lead.

Although Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back with a late header, it proved to be only a consolation as United held firm for the win.

What Sánchez said

After the match, Sánchez took to Instagram to apologise to Chelsea fans and his teammates.

“On me today guys, big sorry for that, team put a massive effort on the second half but couldn’t get there,” he wrote.

Chelsea will now be without Sánchez for the next fixtures as he serves his suspension, leaving Maresca with a decision to make between backup keepers Djordje Petrović and Lucas Bergström.
