Despite already scoring two goals this season, the lanky Shabana midfielder is adamant that the team should come first before individual accolades, which is what he is totally focused on at the moment.

Shabana hotshot midfielder Peter Ogechi ‘Maestro’ insists he is putting the team first before his own interests as he attempts to help the team do better and achieve their goals this season.

After a 17-year absence, Shabana were promoted back to the topflight of Kenyan football, and on Friday, got their first win of the season against giants Tusker, which is sure to play a pivotal role in helping them finish in a respectable position come the end of the season.

Ogechi was one of the National Super League’s top scorers last season, and has carried that momentum on to the big stage this season.

However, the lanky midfielder is adamant that the team should come first before individual accolades, which is what he is totally focused on at the moment.

“I am not thinking about getting goals. I am thinking about helping the team get into a better position,” Ogechi told Pulse Sports.

“I am helping the team achieve its targets this season. After that, I can start thinking about individual accolades because we are thinking about how we will strengthen the team.

“I also want to thank God because I have two league goals so far. I am sure more goals will come though, but they will come once the team starts performing well consistently and with teamwork.”

The midfielder scored 14 goals in the NSL last season, with all of them being netted in multiple ways. Some were bullet headers and others were balls that were struck from distance, underpinning his completeness.

As one of the side’s star players, he is carrying the hopes on numerous Shabana fans, who will be hoping he can maintain his momentum in the top flight where he has already netted two league goals to help the side maintain its momentum.
