Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has criticised the lack of defending in the Premier League, citing the 4-4 result between Chelsea and Manchester City as an example.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has spoken on the high-scoring nature of Premier League matches, criticising it as a lack of proper defending.

The Argentine is famed for his defensive approach which has brought him success at Atletico Madrid since 2011 when he first arrived at the club so his thoughts are on brand.

Simeone expressed his thoughts on the Premier League following the incredible game between Chelsea and Manchester City which ended 4-4.

Simeone said, "I like to defend well. You watch English football and there is 4-4, 6-3 games… but no one defends?!"

"I see it and I think that no one defends. I think that if I can defend well and I can approach them in attack, I can become a champion," the 53-year-old continued.

He backed up his assertion by citing examples of success achieved in football through solid defending, "Barça became champion last year because of a solid defence."

Simeone has been the coach of Atletico Madrid for 12 years and led the club to unprecedented success including two La Liga titles.
