MKO Abiola Sports complex set to host continental sporting events

The newly renovated MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Ogun State is poised to become a hub for continental sporting events, with several high-profile competitions slated for the facility this year.

The complex has already attracted attention from major sporting bodies, including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the West African Football Union (WAFU B).

According to Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, NFF boss, the MKO Abiola Sports Complex will host several key events, including a two-legged friendly match between Nigeria's Super Falcons and Cameroon's Indomitable Lionesses, with the second leg scheduled for June 3rd.

Also, the Under-17 WAFU B Tournament in September 2025, featuring seven countries, including Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Togo, Benin, and Ghana.

Nigeria's Super Falcons will face France this weekend.

What NFF said?

"We have arranged two-legged matches; the first leg will be played on May 31st, and the second will be played on June 3rd.

“So, we plan to play the first match on May 31st at Remo Stars Stadium, and the second match will be held in Abeokuta, so the match on June 3rd will be held at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex," Alhaji Gusau stated.

However, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun expressed his administration's commitment to developing a sports economy within the state, ensuring that the National Sports Festival sets a new benchmark for hosting multi-sports competitions in the country.

"We will build an economy around sports, and I want to thank you for supporting us in that... This will help us strengthen the sports economy that we have begun to ensure we sustain this stadium that we have built," Governor Abiodun said.

The Governor also pledged his administration's unwavering support to ensure that the state-owned team, Gateway Football Club, regains its former glory.

"As a government, I want to pledge that we will do everything to support sports, particularly football. Our Gateway Football Club—whatever it is that we are going to do, whichever way—we will invest," he concluded.

The MKO Abiola Sports Complex will also host the All African Under-18 and Under-20 athletics in July 2025, further solidifying its position as a premier sports venue in Nigeria.
