Nairobi City Stars handed Sofapaka their fourth straight defeat with a 2-1 win, momentarily moving to fourth place in the league standings.

As pressure continues to mount on coach Francis Haringingo, Nairobi City Stars handed Sofapaka their fourth straight defeat of the 2023/24 FKF Premier League campaign following their 2-1  loss at the Kasarani Annex on Saturday afternoon

It was Simba wa Nairobi's second victory of the season and it elevated them to fourth spot on the league standings ahead of their clash with Kenya Police FC on Saturday, October 7.

City Stars showcased their intent early on as Denis Oalo had a golden opportunity to open the scoring as early as the first minute. However, the attacker’s shot from the centre of the box sailed over the bar.

The Nicholas Muyoti-coached side was forced to make an early change in the 13th minute when Rowland Makati went down injured and his place was taken by Calvins Masawa.

City Stars continued to apply pressure during the opening exchanges of the match, as the shots at goal statistics began to increase for the traveling outfit.

Sofapaka began seeing more of the ball as the half progressed and applied pressure soon after the 15th-minute mark.

City Stars' pressure paid off in the 16th minute as Kelvin Etemesi opened his account for the 2023/24 campaign. In a favorable position inside the Sofapaka half, he managed to get on the end of a cross which was played in by Denis Oalo.

Both teams created numerous scoring chances after Simba wa Nairobi took the lead, with the hosts edging City Stars on the possession count slightly. Nonetheless, City Stars headed into the break as the happier outfit as a result of Etemesi's effort.

With the second half commencing,  Francis Haringingo decided to make a triple substitution bringing in Jacob Osano, Humphrey Mieno, and Andre Kalama for Brent Omwena, Amos Asembeka, and Simon Abuko respectively.

While City Stars created a couple of goal-scoring opportunities going forward, the Batoto ba Mungu managed to draw level inside the first 10 minutes of the second 45. Evans Maliachi headed into the net after a wonderful delivery from Oliver Maloba.

City Stars bossed the possession count towards the hour mark and penned the hosts back in their own half. With Sofapaka playing under the cosh, Simba wa Nairobi actively searched for another goal.

Fiston Razak continued to unsettle City Stars' defence from the left flank and he delivered a quality cross that was headed wide off the target by Humphrey Mieno.

However, it was City Stars who took the lead at the hour mark with Vincent Owino causing damage inside the Batoto ba Mungu box before firing into the back of the net from an assist by Etemesi.

The two teams attacked each other after the hour mark with both teams having made changes. The exciting being double substitution by City Stars where Samuel Kapen, Andrew Kisilu were replaced by Newton Ochieng and Gilbert Abala

Sofapaka dominated during the closing stages of the match and produced wave after wave of attacks inside City Stars half. Nonetheless, Simba wa Nairobi survived the late onslaught to secure a 2-1 win at Kasarani.
