Mourinho declares ‘destiny’ to manage Portugal at World Cup

Jose Mourinho has declared that it is his “destiny” to manage the Portugal national team at a FIFA World Cup, while also leaving the door open for a potential future role with England.

The Fenerbahce boss, who has managed some of Europe’s biggest clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Manchester United, has never hidden his ambition to take charge of his homeland.

What Mourinho said

Speaking to Sporty Net, Mourinho insisted that his first international coaching job must be with Portugal, citing both loyalty and identity.

“I’ve been away from Portugal since 2004, and I don’t think my country would accept me coaching a team other than my own,” Mourinho said.

He continued, “My destiny, in terms of internationals, is to play in a World Cup with the Portuguese national team. My first experience has to be with Portugal.”

He also dismissed previous reports linking him to the Brazil job, explaining, “I never considered coaching the Brazilian national team. Brazil, obviously, because of the historical relationship between our countries, but it was never in my plans. My country comes first.”

Despite his firm stance on Portugal being his first choice, Mourinho admitted that other nations could be an option later in his career, particularly those with personal and professional connections.

“People have to understand that I’m a professional and that I can coach other teams, but always teams with which I have something that connects me. England, because it’s my home, Italy because I worked there for several years. But Portugal has to come first," he added.

Currently, Spain’s Roberto Martinez is in charge of Portugal and led the team to victory in the Nations League this summer.

However, speculation has mounted over Mourinho potentially replacing him after Euro 2024.

Portugal are due to begin their World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign in September with trips to Armenia and Hungary, and the debate over who should lead the Seleção into the tournament continues to grow.
