Sell him now or forget about trophies — Chelsea legend Mikel Obi warns Maresca
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has sent a strong warning to Blues manager Enzo Maresca ahead of the 2025-26 season.
What Mikel said
The former Super Eagles midfielder has been highly critical of Chelsea striker talents and has, on multiple occasions, urged the club to make a move for top-quality players in the position, like Victor Osimhen.
Mikel was a pundit on DAZN, watching his former club make light work of PSG to time the World Cup. Given the performances of the pair of new strikers, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, Mikel has seemingly cooled on the striker point. However, on the DAZN broadcast, he mentioned the need to sign a goalkeeper.
“I still believe we do need a top, top goalkeeper,” Mikel said, per the BBC. “Robert Sanchez had a brilliant game today but going into the new season with the Champions League and the Premier League, I think you still need another top goalkeeper that is going to come in and compete with him.
“Healthy competition is important and we've seen that with the signing of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has repeatedly reiterated his confidence in Robert Sanchez. Chelsea were recently in negotiations for Mike Maignan from AC Milan but could not reach an agreement with the Serie A giants.
