Craig Burley has lambasted the Spanish Federation for letting the Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe escape with a slap on the wrist after his recent sending-off.

Former Scotland midfielder Craig Burley has criticised the Spanish Federation (RFEF) for only handing Kylian Mbappe a one-match ban after his red card against Alaves

Mbappe has received a one-match La Liga suspension after his red card in Real Madrid's 1-0 victory against the relegation-threatened side.

The red card was issued following a VAR review for a challenge on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco in the 38th minute.

Mbappe's tackle was deemed a late and forceful lunge, with his studs making contact high on Blanco's leg.

As a result of the initial yellow being upgraded to a red, the Frenchman will be unavailable for Madrid's next LaLiga fixture at home to Athletic Club on April 20.

However, he is eligible to play in their league game against Getafe three days later and in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on April 26.

Burley reacts to Mbappe ban

Burley felt the Real Madrid star got off easy with a one-match suspension, with the erstwhile Chelsea midfielder suggesting that the ban should have been more severe.

“For them to have given him a one-game ban when they could have given him three…he should have had six,” said the pundit on ESPN.

“He should have had the book thrown at him, that’s how bad it was. The more we looked at it, the worse it got.

“The Spanish authorities are in a pickle. They have a referee who’s clueless. A player could have been in a hospital with a broken leg.

“And we have the authority that could have given him three games is giving him one game for one of the worst challenges that I can remember for a long, long, long time.

“This is a disgrace to the Spanish game.”

Los Blancos assistant manager Davide Ancelotti revealed after the match that Mbappe acknowledged his actions and sought forgiveness.

Real Madrid are currently second in LaLiga, four points behind leaders Barcelona with seven games remaining.

What’s next for Mbappe?

The forward should play as Real Madrid aim to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Arsenal in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg at Santiago Bernabeu

The winner of the tie will advance to the semis to face Paris Saint-Germain.
