Manchester United’s Old Trafford snubbed in list of stadiums to host Euro 2028

Only one stadium in Manchester will host matches in the 2028 Euros, and it will not be Manchester United's Old Trafford

Up to 10 stadiums will host the 2028 European Championships in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but Manchester United’s Old Trafford will not be one of them.

UK and Ireland win rights to host Euro 2028

UEFA announced the decision to give hosting rights for the 2028 Euros to the UK and Ireland today, after hearing bids from all the countries vying for the rights.

In the end, the UK and Ireland were the only option left in the bidding process after Turkey pulled out to contest the rights for the 2032 edition instead alongside Italy.

The Turks were also successful in their bid to host the 2032 edition of the Euros, with current defending champions Italy set to be the co-hosts of that tournament.

Thanks to the success of the UK and Ireland, 10 of the biggest stadiums across England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland have been shortlisted to play host to Europe’s finest, but a number of top venues will also miss out.

Old Trafford, Anfield miss out on 2028 Euros cut

Expectedly, locations like Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Glasgow’s Hampden Park were all chosen. However, Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium was jettisoned in favour of neighbouring Everton’s uncompleted Bramley-Moore Dock, while Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium also missed the cut.

Perhaps most surprisingly, there will be only one stadium in Manchester hosting the Euros, as Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium was chosen ahead of Manchester United’s Old Trafford, which has previously been a staple of tournaments held in England, including the 1966 World Cup, the 1996 Euros, the 2012 Olympics, and the 2022 Women’s Euros.

It is believed that Manchester United withdrew from consideration to host matches at the Euros, as they could not guarantee Old Trafford’s availability to host fixtures in 2030 due to planned renovations.

Other stadiums chosen to host the 2030 Euros include Casement Park in Belfast, Newcastle's St James' Park, Aston Villa’s Villa Park, Cardiff's Principality Stadium, and Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
