Ruud van Nistelrooy has resigned as manager of PSV Eindhoven despite winning two trophies.

Former Manchester United striker and Dutch legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy has quit his role as PSV manager with immediate effect, with the club claiming that the 46-year-old cited a lack of support from the board as a reason for his decision.

Van Nistelrooy leaves PSV

A statement from PSV read:

"Head coach Ruud van Nistelrooij announced on Wednesday morning that he would leave PSV after several discussions about internal affairs that have taken place in recent weeks.

"A meeting took place on Tuesday evening between the Board of Directors and Van Nistelrooij. It was decided to keep the focus on next Sunday’s match against AZ and to continue talking after the season.

"Van Nistelrooij reported this morning that in his opinion there was not enough support within the club to continue longer. He immediately explained this to the players and staff.

"This Sunday, at the request of the management, Fred Rutten will temporarily take over his role as Head Coach. ‘PSV regrets Van Nistelrooij’s decision and is grateful to him for winning the Johan Cruijff Scale and the TOTO K."

The former Manchester United striker started his coaching career with PSV’s youth team and was brought in as the club’s first-team manager last summer.
