Man United vs Newcastle: Dorgu’s first goal for the Red Devils seals win against the Magpies
The Red Devils have had a difficult patch in the last few weeks, dropping points in back-to-back games.
With their chance to qualify for next season's European competition gradually slipping, they needed a win to get back on track.
However, they had to fight hard to secure a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford, with the result pushing them to fifth on the table.
As it happened
Manchester United began life without skipper Bruno Fernandes, who is expected to be out for three weeks with a hamstring injury.
Casemiro returned from a one-match suspension, while Lisandro Martinez took over as captain as he replaced Leny Yoro in the other change to the side beaten at Aston Villa.
On the other hand, Newcastle are unchanged from the team that drew with Chelsea last weekend. Former Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga has not been named on the bench, but goalkeeper Nick Pope is fit enough to return from a groin issue.
Man United started the game brightly, pressing high up the pitch and forcing Newcastle to a few moments with the ball.
Their pressure paid off in the 24th minute after Diogo Dalot's long throw was only partially cleared and Patrick Dorgu smashed a volley from 15 yards into the bottom left corner.
In the second half, Newcastle changed their approach and pinned the Red Devils back into their own half.
They created some chances in the game but could not find a way to get the equaliser. The game ended with Ruben Amorim getting his team back to winning ways in the EPL.
