Atalanta agree €21.5m deal with Southampton to sign Ghana’s Kamaldeen Sulemana, who impressed against Man United and is set to join coach Ivan Juric in Serie A on a four-year contract.

Atalanta have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign Ghanaian international Kamaldeen Sulemana in a deal reportedly worth €17.5 million.

According to a report from the Athletic, the transfer fee is payable in five annual instalments, plus €4 million in add-ons, team performance bonuses, and a 15% sell-on clause.

Sulemana, 23, is set to sign a four-year contract until 2029, with an option for a further year, and will undergo a medical in Bergamo after cutting short his holiday in Accra.

Sulemana’s Rise and Move to Serie A

Sulemana joined Southampton from Stade Rennais in February 2023 for an initial €25 million but experienced a challenging spell as the club was relegated from the Premier League.

Kamaldeen Sulemana set to be reunited with his coach at Atalanta.

Despite this, he made 30 appearances in the 2024-25 season, contributing two goals and three assists, including a standout performance against Manchester United where he outplayed defender Leny Yoro.

His familiarity with Atalanta’s new coach Ivan Juric, who previously managed him at Southampton, is expected to ease his transition to Serie A.

Atalanta’s strategic move amid Lookman exit rumours

The signing of Sulemana is viewed as a strategic move by Atalanta to reinforce their attacking options ahead of the new season and the UEFA Champions League campaign.

With speculation mounting over the potential exit of Ademola Lookman, Sulemana is poised to fill the void left by the Nigerian winger.

His experience in England and knowledge of Juric’s tactics position him well to make an immediate impact in Italy’s top flight.

This transfer marks a big step for Sulemana’s career as he seeks to establish himself in one of Europe’s elite leagues while helping Atalanta compete at the highest level.
