Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was asked if he thinks the club’s board are still backing him.

Enzo Maresca insists he continues to have the unwavering support of the Chelsea hierarchy despite a downturn in performances and results.

The Blues have only managed five wins in their last 16 league matches, slipping to sixth place in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s dip in performance was compounded by a disappointing 2-1 home defeat against Legia Warsaw on Thursday night.

Despite progressing to the Conference League semi-finals with a 4-2 aggregate victory, the Blues were booed off the pitch at Stamford Bridge, reflecting growing discontent among supporters towards the Italian manager.

What Maresca said

Maresca, who joined the West London club from Leicester City last summer, signing a five-year deal, believes he retains the full backing of the owners and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.

"Yeah, absolutely, yes,” said Maresca. “I tried to explain yesterday (Wednesday) — we cannot change the idea the day after.

“I said and if I need to, I’ll say it again….in the last two years, Chelsea has been zero times top four, top five. This season we spent all season, almost all season, top four, top five, Champions League spots.

“We are in a semi-final of a European competition. So why now we need to change something? I think I don’t have any doubt about what we are doing, in the way we are doing, and for different reasons.

“We had some bad moments or some setbacks, like tonight (against Legia Warsaw), during the season, for sure. But this, for me, makes us stronger for the future.”

Maresca’s men will face Swedish side Djurgardens in the competition’s semi-final, with the first leg to be held on May 1 and the reverse fixture seven days later.

What’s next for Chelsea?

Maresca’s men travel to West London neighbours Fulham on Easter Sunday, aiming to avenge their Boxing Day defeat.
