Leeds United have completed the signing of France Under-21 striker Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim in a club record deal, subject to international clearance.

Georginio Rutter moves to Elland Road on a five-and-a-half-year deal for a fee rising to £36m.

The 20-year-old Frenchman scored 11 goals in 64 appearances for the Bundesliga club, after joining from Rennes in 2021.

Attacking Boost for Leeds

Leeds want Rutter to boost their attacking options as he can play either in a central role or in wider positions cutting in from the flank. Crysencio Summerville and Luis Sinisterra are in the treatment room while fellow forward Patrick Bamford has a chequered injury record.

Jesse Marsch was certainly in need of a boost, having been forced to deny his side were at risk of relegation after Friday night’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa made it seven games without a win in all competitions.

Rutter first came through with Rennes, and scored his first professional goal in a Champions League match against Sevilla aged 18. Hoffenheim snapped him up only a couple of months later and he made a name for himself in the Bundesliga as an exciting young talent, scoring 11 goals and adding 11 assists in 64 appearances.

He becomes the club’s second signing of the winter transfer window, following the £17.7m deal for the Austria defender Max Wöber from Red Bull Salzburg.

What next for Rutter?

The hope for Rutter and Leeds is that he can hit the ground running and provide the much needed attacking firepower needed to propel Leeds up the table.
