Somalia has lined up international friendlies, featuring Kenyan-born defender, ahead of their significant 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

For the first time in its footballing history, Somalia is gearing up to play two international friendly matches in a single week marking a significant stride in the nation's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The upcoming games serve as preparatory steps leading to the World Cup qualifier clashes slated for November.

A delegation comprising 16 players and six officials departed from Mogadishu on Sunday, destined for Morocco. They will rendezvous with 13 additional players engaged with foreign football leagues.

Together, this assembly of talent represents a promising mix of local and international experience, ready to make their mark on the global stage under the guidance of Moroccan tactician Rachid Lousteque.

Somalia is scheduled to play its first international friendly against Niger on Saturday, October 14, followed by a matchup with Sierra Leone on Tuesday, October 17.

Football enthusiasts and supporters will witness these historic encounters at Stade Berrechid in Morocco, a neutral ground offering a level playing field for the emerging Somali team and their opponents.

In the words of Somali Football Federation president, Ali Abdi Mohamed, “This year we are playing two international friendlies; it will be the first time Somalia plays international friendlies. I am very delighted that we are in action ahead of our FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Algeria and Uganda.”

As part of their World Cup campaign, the Somali national team is slated to face Algeria on November 13. Following this, on November 21, the team will host Uganda in Morocco, which will serve as Somalia’s home ground for the World Cup qualifier clashes.

Abdi Muya Salim, a Kenyan-born defender who plays for Orlando City in the US Major Soccer League (MLS), is among the players called to represent the Somali national team in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Somalia FA president Mohamed expressed his gratitude towards his Moroccan counterpart, Fousi Lakjaa, for the generous offer allowing Somalia to use Morocco as its home ground for the qualifiers.
