Brian Mandela, Sven Yida and Ovella Ochieng ply their trades down south.

Three Kenyan footballers based in South Africa have missed out on nominations for that country’s Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) 13 awards category confirming the players’ tailing fortunes in the current season.

The PSL revealed 27 players short-listed for the 2022/2023 PSL awards to be dished out in a virtual awards ceremony which will be broadcasted on the SuperSport PSL channel (202) on Sunday, 28 May 2023.

The nominations are for best goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, young player, top scorer, footballer of the season, players’ player of the season, MTN Last Man Standing, and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

Harambee Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Brian Mandela missed out on the list as he hardly played this season due to injuries despite his team having won the league title.

Other Kenyans in PSL are Ovella Ochieng, who plays for Richards Bay, and Sven Yidah, who plays for Marumo Gallants.

Mandela’s teammates Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams have been nominated for the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season award.

Their coach Rhulani Mokwena has been nominated in the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season category and will fight for the trophy alongside SuperSport United’s Gavin Hunt and Jose Riveiro of Orlando Pirates.

All the nominations and voting were done by the Premier Division head coaches, where only one head coach per club was allowed to vote, and coaches were not allowed to nominate or vote for their own teammate.

Mandela’s Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for the return leg of the CAF Champions League semi-finals against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, set for Saturday.

Sundowns managed a goalless draw in the first leg, ending with nine men after red cards to Neo Maema and Marcelo Allende in either half at the Mohammed V Stadium last weekend.
