Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Shabana, Ambani, who was stepping in for the absent Tom Juma, has revealed why they struggled to score open play goals.

AFC Leopards assistant coach Fred Ambani has revealed the reason they have struggled to score open play goals after failing to find the back of the net in their opening three games of the season.

Leopards failed to score in their opening three games against FC Talanta, KCB, and Muhoroni Youth, before scoring their first two of the season against Kenya Police from setpieces.

They then followed it up with another goal from the penalty spot against Shabana last weekend. However, scoring from open play is a problem that the side will have to work on to become sustainable.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Shabana, Ambani, who was standing in for the absent Tom Juma, has revealed why they have resorted to setpieces to create chances.

“Yeah. We needed to look for ways to start scoring goals and saw that set pieces is another way we can reduce our profligacy issues,” Ambani said.

“It is something we can work on because if you look, most of the new players we signed are still gelling into the team. They still have not gelled with those who were there before.”

AFC Leopards have some creative players on their books, such as veteran Kevin Kimani and winger Victor ‘Aguero’ Odhiambo, but have struggled to create from open play.

Ambani has blamed a lack of gelling into the team quickly as the reason why they have struggled to create a lot of chances from open play yet.

“These new players are still adapting to the team. If you look at how we used to play before, these players will take time to adapt to us. We want to see if they will gel quickly so that we see if we will create more from open play.”

“We want to use it to build the confidence in the players to see if they can start scoring goals from open play again. If we can score from set pieces, it is a plus to the team.”

Leopards will face sworn rivals Gor Mahia in a much anticipated Mashemeji derby which will take place at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
