Ronaldo once claimed he would retire if Messi wins the 2019 Ballon d’Or

According to French news media outlet L’Equippe,Ronaldo once claimed that he would retire from football if he did not win the 2019 edition of the award.

CR7 had left Real Madrid to play in the Serie A with Juventus and due to his goalscoring form, the Portuguese captain said he deserved the award.

"It's easy to stay in your comfort zone when you are successful. I took a risk coming to Turin. I changed club, championship, football culture, I took a risk, and it was that risk that, I'm sure, made me not win the Ballon d'Or in 2018. If Messi wins the Ballon d'Or this year, I will retire from football."

Ronaldo did not attend the ceremony as well as not retiring and the plaque was given to Messi who clinched his sixth, moving one step ahead of his Portuguese rival.
