Manchester United and David De Gea have parted company after 12 years together.

Manchester United and goalkeeper David De Gea have ended their relationship following a message from the Spaniard.

De Gea confirmed he has left the club after 12 years at Old Trafford with a statement on his social media account.

"I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters," De Gea posted on Twitter on Saturday afternoon. 

De Gea departs United

After 12 years at the club, the goalkeeper’s contract expired on June 30 but he remained in talks with the Red Devils for an extended stay at the club.

However, De Gea has now announced his departure via a post on social media.

“It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here,” he said. “I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.

Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.”

“I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club.”

United manager Erik Ten Hag had been vocal about his wish to keep the 31-year-old but remained in the hunt for a new first choice with Andre Onana closing in on a move.

With De Gea gone, United are expected to speed up the signing of Inter Milan’s Onana, who will be reunited with Ten Hag.
