A former Premier League defender has commented on Cole Palmer “speaking with his chest” following Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory over PSG.
Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has reacted to Cole Palmer’s remarks after Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory.
Speaking after the Premier League club’s 3-0 win, Palmer fired back at critics for their non-stop reprimanding of the West Londoners during the 2024-25 season.
"Everyone has talked a lot of sh-t about us all season,” said the Chelsea star.
"It is a great feeling to win this. Before the game everyone doubted us and that makes this win even better.
"We are building something special here, something important here. We have a young team with plenty of potential.
"But I feel we are going in the right direction and can go on and win a lot more in the future if we keep going this way."
Palmer, who won the Golden Ball, scored two and set up Joao Pedro in Sunday’s final, sealing a commendable first year in charge for Enzo Maresca, who also won the Conference League.
Onuoha reacts to Palmer’s post-Club World final remarks
When asked, Onuoha lauded the Chelsea man for his honest comments, but cited Enzo Maresca’s fault in playing down the Blues’ title prospects last season.
“I like the fact that he’s speaking with his chest,” said Onuoha on ESPN.
“For him, seeing on a day-to-day basis what the manager is doing, how the players are improving and how he fits in with this, and that’s great.
“But what I would adjust (the feeling that critics first played down Chelsea’s chances), one of them was Enzo Maresca, when Chelsea were close to the top, saying there’s no way this team can win the league.
When is Chelsea’s next match?
Chelsea, unlike other Premier League sides, will begin pre-season late due to Club World Cup exertions.
The players have since departed for their post-season holidays, with the team expected to reconvene in three weeks.
Chelsea’s next match is scheduled to be against Bayer Leverkusen on August 8, and Enzo Maresca's team will face off with AC Milan two days later as part of the 2025 VisitMalta Weekender mini-tournament.
