There is also an outside chance the English midfielder could be back in the squad even before the Bayern clash.

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount is targeting a return from injury against Bayern Munich when both sides clash on Wednesday 20 September at the Allianz Arena.

Mount has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring problem during their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on August 19.

He came off in the 85th minute of that game. United later described the injury as a “small complaint” that would keep him out until after September’s international break.

The England midfielder missed subsequent matches against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal but is ready for action again after stepping up his comeback in recent days.

A follow-up scan has returned positive results but manager Erik ten Hag has opted for caution in planning Mount’s return date to avoid risking further injury.

According to The Athletic, there is an outside chance he could be back in the squad for United’s Premier League match against Brighton at Old Trafford on September 16.

But the former Chelsea star is aiming to be ready when United take on Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena just four days later.

Mount joined United from Chelsea in July after the clubs agreed a deal worth £60 million (Ksh. 10 billion).

The 24-year-old, who made his competitive debut in a 1-0 season-opening win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, has signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

He has so far been deployed alongside Casemiro but the arrival of Sofyan Amrabat is expected to give Mount a license to operate in a more advanced position.

United are currently 11th in the early Premier League table after two wins and two defeats.
