This news comes shortly after Torres spent time shadowing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool's training sessions.

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is reportedly set to step down from his role at the helm of Atletico Madrid's U19 team at the end of the season as per Spanish outlet Relevo.

The Spaniard has been at the helm since 2021 but has decided to move on.

This news comes shortly after Torres spent time shadowing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool's training sessions.

The warm reception he received from the Reds squad, including hugs and high-fives, sparked a wave of excitement among Liverpool fans.

Atletico's Next Move: Stepping Up or Letting Go?

The news of Torres' departure leaves Atletico with a decision to make. They must determine whether to promote him to work with their B team, potentially even the first team, or allow him to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The report mentions this as a potential "letting him fly the nest" scenario. Spanish outlet Relevo suggests Torres believes he's reached the end of his chapter with the youth team and might be in talks with club officials this month.

This decision comes despite the success he's enjoyed with the U19s. Under his leadership, the team currently sits atop their 16-team league, boasting a stellar record of 20 wins and only 2 losses in 25 games.

They have already secured one title under Torres and finished second the previous season.

However, with Diego Simeone extending his contract with Atletico until 2027 in November, a move to the first team seems unlikely shortly.

Relevo believes promotion to the B team, where many players he nurtured in the U19s currently play, would be the logical path. However, the report also acknowledges that Torres might attract interest from other clubs.

A Look Back at Torres' Playing Career

The 40-year-old Spaniard ended his illustrious playing career with Sagan Tosu in Japan in 2019, having amassed a staggering 301 goals for both club and country.

Notably, he spent four prolific seasons at Liverpool (2007-2011), where he won the World Cup with Spain during his tenure.

However, his career took a surprising turn when he made a record-breaking £50 million move to Chelsea, the most expensive Spanish player, and British transfer fee at the time.
