The Nigerian international's contract with Leicester expires in June 2024

The Nigerian international's contract with Leicester expires in June 2024, and he is not expected to renew it, even if the Foxes manage to gain promotion back to the Premier League

This has sparked interest from several clubs, including Barcelona.

Long-Term Admiration by Barca

Barca have long been admirers of Ndidi's talent, and according to Sport, a move for the 26-year-old midfielder in 2024 is still a possibility.

The report also mentions that there's "a lot of competition" for Ndidi's signature, but Barcelona believes they can convince him to join them, as per Sportmole UK.

However, Barcelona's financial situation remains a significant obstacle. The Catalan giants are also linked with moves for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich. Still, both transfers are deemed unlikely next year due to their high valuations.

With Barcelona aiming to sign both Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix permanently from Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, respectively, there might need to be more funds left for a new central midfielder.

Previous Transfer Interest

Barcelona previously expressed interest in signing Ndidi in 2022 but was quoted a fee of €60 million (£51.4 million) by Leicester.

Competition for Ndidi

Juventus and Sevilla are also said to be in the race for Ndidi, who will be able to negotiate with foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement starting in January 2024.

Ndidi's Impressive Season

Ndidi has been a critical player for Leicester City in the 2023-24 campaign, scoring three goals and providing five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Ndidi's Career Highlights

Since joining Leicester from Genk in January 2017, Ndidi has made 255 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and registering 17 assists. He has also gained valuable experience in the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

Despite widespread speculation about his departure following Leicester's relegation, Ndidi remained at the King Power Stadium beyond the summer transfer deadline.

Barcelona's Midfield Options:

Although Barcelona is currently without Gavi's services due to a knee injury, Xavi still has a plethora of midfield options at his disposal. This includes Pedri, Oriol Romeu, Frenkie de Jong, Ilkay Gundogan, Fermin Lopez, and several promising youngsters like Marc Casado, Aleix Garrido, Angel Alarcon, and Unai Hernandez.

Conclusion:

While Barcelona's interest in Ndidi is genuine, their ability to secure his signature will depend heavily on their financial situation and their success in offloading other players.
