AFCON 2025 - ‘They must fight for their country’ - Nigerian legend questions Super Eagles' spirit
The 35th edition of the continental championship is set to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
For the upcoming AFCON, the Super Eagles have been placed in Group C, where they will face Tunisia and Uganda.
Lawal speaks on Super Eagles team
Reflecting on his own experiences, Lawal highlighted the significance of the tournament, despite never having lifted the trophy himself.
"I participated in the Africa Cup of Nations four times between 2000 and 2006. It is the biggest tournament on the continent and we must respect it," he told Filgoal. "I wasn’t lucky enough to win the title, but I did win the silver and bronze medals."
"It is important that players join their national teams when they are called up to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, because the absence of stars negatively affects the tournament," he stated.
While acknowledging the talent within the current Nigerian setup, Lawal expressed concerns about their mentality, particularly in light of their recent struggles in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
"In Nigeria, we are disappointed not to have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and we feel that the players do not have the character and spirit to win the Africa Cup of Nations," Lawal explained. "Even though they are a special generation, they must fight for their country."
