As the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws near, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, faces not just on-field challenges but also off-field distractions, particularly concerning social media.

The team's coach, Jose Peseiro, and captain, Ahmed Musa, offer contrasting perspectives on the impact of social media on the players.

Peseiro's Concerns Over Social Media Influence

Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles, has voiced concerns about the negative impact of social media on his players.

Peseiro highlights how derogatory comments and "fake news" on social media platforms can mentally affect players, especially the younger ones.

Jose Peseiro said ahead of the Super Eagles' opening game, “These players are 23, 24 & we think they are strong but they also have mental health and they see these things on social media."

He worries that while players might be adept at handling on-field pressure, the off-field impact of social media is a different ball game, particularly when the criticism comes from fans back home.

This concern reflects a broader challenge faced by athletes globally, where their online presence can significantly affect their mental health and focus.

Musa's Dismissal of Social Media Censorship

In contrast, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa dismisses the idea of social media censorship within the team. He insists that the players are mature enough to handle their social media activities and not take negative comments to heart.

Musa's stance suggests a level of resilience among the players, indicating their ability to navigate the often turbulent waters of social media without it impacting their performance on the field.
