FKFPL AFC Leopards chairman picks who he wants to win the title between Gor Mahia and Tusker

Dan Shikanda has made his choice between the leading contenders who are locked in a tight battle for the league crown.

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda is backing Tusker FC to win the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) over bitter rivals Gor Mahia with the two teams locked in a tight title race.

Heading into the final four games of the season, Tusker are top of the table with 64 points, one ahead of second-placed Gor, while Nzoia Sugar are third with 60.

Leopards handed Tusker a huge favour last weekend when they beat Gor 2-1 in the Mashemeji Derby to see Robert Matano’s men assume the league leadership and the club’s chairman would not mind a second straight league crown for the Brewers

Shikanda’s preference has to do with how the fortunes of Leopards will pan out given they are eyeing the FKF Cup to qualify for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Ingwe face Kakamega Homeboyz in the semi-final on Saturday and victory will see them take on either Tusker or Ulinzi Stars in the final.

“Football is all about interests so if I am in the final of the FKF Cup, I will pray to get Tusker in the final and they win the league,” Shikanda told Pulse Sports. “But if I am not in the final, I will not have an interest in any other team.”

“I will try to make sure I push my boys, to go to continental football through the cup and we would like the best team in the league to be champions,” he added.

His choice clashes with coach Patrick Aussems’ preference after the Belgian tactician said last weekend that he would rather see Gor crowned over Tusker after his touchline spat with Matano last month.

Shikanda will hope that Leopards get past the next two hurdles to claim the cup that they last won in 2017, since if they were to lose out and Tusker seal a double, Gor would represent Kenya in the Confederation Cup, if they finish runners-up in the league.

Gor can also seal a Champions League place by clinching the league with Tusker claiming the Confederation Cup slot were they to claim the cup while Ulinzi and Homeboyz also have a chance at the second-tier competition of African club football if they reach and win the final.
