The CS added that he wants the Football Kenya Federation to take the crime of match-fixing seriously and show no mercy on the violators.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has revealed that plans are underway to amend the Sports Act in order to impose strict rules on match-fixing and the use of performance enhancing players among football players.

Namwamba came up with the Act in 2012 when he was the Sports CS and he revealed that it needs to be strengthened in order to address the two problems destroying the quality of the game in the country.

“We are working on strengthening the Sports Act to make sure the people who commit such crimes face their consequences. It has been there for 10 years and I have observed the weaknesses of the act,” Namwamba told Citizen.

The CS added that he wants the Football Kenya Federation to take the crime of match-fixing seriously and show no mercy on the violators since claims of match-fixing have been rife in Kenya.

As reported by Citizen, on February 8, FKF launched a probe against then Mathare United players Lennox Ogutu and Alphonce Ndonye over match-fixing claims, with the club suspending them.

On March 10, Russian Akhiad Kubiev, Ugandan Bernard Navendi, and Kenyan Martin Munga Mutua also found themselves in hot soup after allegedly approaching some City Stars players to help them execute their agenda but the players opted to report them.

These are just but a few cases that have been reported to the authorities.

“I want all players and people involved to face very serious charges. I want to join forces with FKF to make sure we do not take these cases lightly since they have been growing rapidly in the country and also worldwide. We want take very serious measures against match fixing,” he said.

He cited the example of Brentford Striker Ivan Toney who is currently facing an eight-month ban due to violating the Football Association betting rules.

Toney has further been charged with a fine of £50,000 (Ksh8,551,999.31) for 232 breaches of the rules.

“We should emulate how they (FA) do their thing…They take serious action against the violators,” Namwamba said.
