Two own goals was enough for Sevilla to run away with a point at Old Trafford in their first-leg quarterfinal clash in the Europa League, much to the displeasure of United fans who have taken to social media to react.

Manchester United were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal clash against Sevilla on Thursday night, April 13, 2023.

United came into this contest unbeaten in their last 24 matches at Old Trafford and shone brightly in the opening minutes of the match.

Jadon Sancho thought he had opened the scoring early in the game, only for the goal to be quickly ruled out for offside.

However, the Red Devils fans soon found cause to jubilate as United would not be denied twice courtesy of a first-half brace from Marcel Sabitzer

Bruno Fernandes set up Sabitzer for the opener in the 14th minutes after the ball deflected into the back of the net.

Seven minutes later, Anthony Martial supplied a defence-splitting ball to put the Austrian in once more to coolly finish past Yassine Bounou and put the hosts 2-0 up  in the early stages.

Sevilla nearly pulled a goal back in the final action of the first half when Tanguy Nianzou’s header was saved at point-blank range by David de Gea, before Raphaël Varane brilliantly cleared off the line to preserve the hosts’ two-goal lead at the break.

Second Half

United picked up from where they left off in the first 45 minutes creating some dangerous chances as Antony almost made it three for the Red Devils early in the second half when he wriggled his way past two defenders before unleashing a curled effort that crashed back off the post.

However, despite United’s dominance for the majority of spells in the game, Sevilla soon found a lifeline in the tie right at the closing stages of the encounter.

Tyrell Malacia went to sleep at the back post, allowing Jesús Navas to sneak behind him and turn the ball in after deflecting off  Malacia to put the scores at 2-1 against the run of play.

United fans were stunned once more by a remarkable Sevilla equaliser in the 92nd minute of stoppage time as  Youssef En-Nesyri's header which looked like it was as drifting well wide of the target took a wicked deflection off United captain Harry Maguire and into the back of the net once more to level matters for the Spaniards ahead of the second leg.
