Nigeria restored its hope to participate in the T20 Cricket World Cup next year after defeating Tanzania at the qualifying competition in Windhoek, Namibia.

The Yellow Greens' hopes of making the World Cup were dented on Thursday in the first qualifying game when the team narrowly lost to Kenya.

The game ended with Nigeria fielding, losing the toss to the Tanzanian side. With an intelligent use of the power-play, the East Africans rallied Nigeria to 139 runs in their innings.

The side captain, Sylvester Okpe-led, said they needed the win to continue chasing the world cup ticket.

Okpe said: "It was a win we needed. We have no excuse but to lock down this win. Our match against Kenya differed from what we had hoped for, and a rain-washed Rwandan encounter that saw us share points didn't help our cause. So, this was a needed win.

Nigeria Cricket Federation President Uyi Akpata, who joined the team in Windhoek yesterday, said the exciting part of the win was the team's confidence.

"We would love to pick the World Cup ticket, but that is a bit difficult now, given the results of our last two matches. We are more focused on using this event to measure our continual development program for the team," Akpata said.

Nigeria will continue their quest with an encounter against Uganda today at the United Cricket Ground.
