Former undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor has retired from boxing due to an eye injury. The Scotsman hangs up his gloves at 34, with a professional record of 19 wins from 22 bouts.
As an amateur, Taylor qualified for the 2012 Olympics and won the Commonwealth Games gold medal. His professional career includes victories over the likes of Jack Catterall, Regis Prograis, and Jose Ramirez.
"This isn't an easy post to make, folks, but on the advice of my medical team, it's unfortunately necessary," Taylor wrote.
"As previously documented, I've been experiencing a recurring eye problem, which unfortunately means I now have to call time on my career, or risk losing my sight. While the fighter in me always wants to keep going, I know I have to listen to the medical experts and save myself from myself.
"This definitely isn't how I wanted to bow out, but I have to listen to the doctors and the people around me. I'm just a wee guy from Scotland who climbed to the very top of the sport, but I couldn't have done it without those who supported me through thick and thin.
"Firstly, I can't thank you, the fans, enough. You’ve always given me your all, spending your hard-earned money to watch me fight. Your support has always meant the world to me, and I’ve never taken it for granted…"
"I know British boxing, and Scottish boxing in particular, is in an exciting place with the focus you have on bringing through the next generation of world champions...It's now time to reflect on my career and look forward to what comes next."
"Thank you all again and God bless."
