Kenya lost the title to Morocco last year for the first time ever since 2007.

During last year's World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Kenya lost the men’s 3000m Steeplechase title for the first time since 2007 when Brimin Kipruto won the title with the country going on to enjoy dominance in the discipline until 2022.

In the 2022 edition, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali took the top honours as Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma settled for second place. Two-time World Champion Conseslus Kipruto sealed the podium in the highly-contested race.

In the recent past, the world of athletics has seen the rise of strong steeplechasers from Ethiopia and Morocco but former World Under-20 3000m Steeplechase bronze medallist Simon Koech is unfazed and will be hoping to bring back Kenya’s glory as he heads to this year’s edition of the global event in Budapest, Hungary.

“I want to assure Kenyans that when I go to Budapest, I will bring back the steeplechase title,” Koech said during a post-race interview at the World Championships National Trials.

During the trials, the 20-year-old had put up a good fight to win the men’s race in 8:22.55 ahead of Abraham Kibiwott and Leonard Bett who finished second and third respectively. He is, however, yet to hit the qualifying time and he still has up to July 30 if he has to go to the global event.

“I am very happy because this is the first time I have been able to make it to the senior team. The training progress has been okay and I’m grateful.

"I preferred running a few senior races and gaining experience while at it…I didn’t want to compete in many races. I have learned how to jump the barriers among other things and I’m glad,” he said.
