We are not ready - Former Super Eagles star worries about AFCON preparations

Former Super Eagles star, Peterside Idah warned that the national team may not be mentally prepared for the high-pressure tournament.

Nigeria’s buildup to AFCON has been clouded by injuries, administrative disputes, and reports of unpaid salaries for head coach Eric Chelle. The lack of warm-up matches has further fuelled concerns.

“I don’t think we are psychologically ready for AFCON,” he admitted.

He added, “Maybe it’s because we didn’t qualify for the World Cup. Look at the atmosphere—nobody is talking about AFCON, nobody really cares. The enthusiasm is very low.”

Despite this, he hopes the team can energise the nation, “Hopefully the players can change things… but they need to do something special.”

Adding to the uncertainty is the case surrounding first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

His club, Chippa United, declared him injured and unavailable for AFCON, claims that have sparked controversy.

Idah believes the issue may be tied to a failed transfer move.

“We heard there was a fallout because another club came for him, and Chippa refused,” he explained.

“Nwabali was said to be unhappy and even went on strike. He’ll report to camp, and we have to wait for tests to know what actually happened.”

Super Eagles are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia.
