Nigeria secured their place in the last four with a commanding victory over Algeria in Marrakech, ending the Desert Foxes’ unbeaten run in the tournament.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen starred in the quarter-final, opening the scoring with a powerful header before providing the assist for Akor Adams' Nigeria’s second goal.

What Shorunmu said

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, Shorunmu praised the Super Eagles for their discipline and intensity against one of the tournament favourites.

“The players fought for everything from the beginning to the end,” Shorunmu said.

He added, “Reaching the AFCON semi-final is a good achievement, especially against a powerful team like Algeria. I think they probably want to win the tournament to compensate the fans for not qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.”

The semi-final now sets up a high-stakes encounter between Nigeria and Morocco, with a place in the final on the line.

While Nigeria are chasing a fourth continental title and its first since 2013, Morocco is under intense pressure to end a 50-year AFCON title drought in front of their home supporters.

According to Shorunmu, that expectation could work in Nigeria’s favour.

“Every game is different, and based on how they played against Algeria, I do not doubt their chances against Morocco.

“Morocco is a great side and they will have the crowd behind them, but I think they will be under more pressure than Nigeria,” he said.

Shorunmu won AFCON silver in 2000 and bronze in 2002 with Nigeria.
