‘We’re the best’ - Super Eagles star reflects on the team performance after bronze medal victory
Nigeria claimed a bronze medal victory over Egypt in a penalty shootout at the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Nigeria secured a 4-2 penalty shootout win after a goalless draw in regulation time, largely thanks to Stanley Nwabali, denying Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush from the spot.
Nigeria finished the competition undefeated in regular play, securing five wins and two draws across their seven matches.
Adams reflects on performance
Speaking after the third-place playoff, Adams expressed pride in the team's performance and unity, even though they fell short of their primary goal of winning the championship.
When asked to evaluate the team's run, Adams was unequivocal. “We’re the best. We’re the best team," he stated. “We came for the gold and we did not take it. But we are proud of what we have been able to achieve.”
"We have a very strong group. Everybody is going home with a better friendship with the next person, as a better person," Adams explained.
"We are all grateful to Eric Chelle for what he has done for us as a group in the last three weeks. He has given me the opportunity to represent my beloved Nigeria."
Despite the win against Egypt, Adams acknowledged a sense of disappointment at not reaching the final. "I’m not very happy, but the most important thing is we came out with the win," he admitted.
However, he was quick to defend the significance of their third-place finish when asked about celebrations.
"Don’t say it’s a bronze medal like it’s simple. No, some people came and went home with nothing," he asserted.
"We just go back to the hotel now, try to eat, and then we’ll see what happens. Everything for me is positive."
