Barcelona have reportedly made significant headway in their summer transfer plans.

Barcelona have secured a breakthrough in their search for defensive reinforcements, with prominent journalist Matteo Moretto reporting that Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni has already agreed to terms and is "very excited" to join the Catalan giants.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Bastoni

Bringing in a defender of Bastoni's pedigree is viewed as a necessity, with the Blaugrana having largely struggled defensively this season, especially as they failed to replace Iñigo Martínez, who departed for the Saudi Pro League last summer.

Interestingly, the reports follow Bastoni’s high-profile defensive error against Bosnia and Herzegovina a few days ago, which directly contributed to Italy's catastrophic failure to qualify for the World Cup.

What the deal requires

Despite Bastoni’s definitive "yes" to the Spanish club, formal negotiations between Barcelona and Inter Milan remain in their absolute infancy, and completing the transfer will require immense financial gymnastics.

The defender is firmly tied down to a contract at the San Siro that runs until  2028, and Inter's hierarchy is reportedly demanding a steep transfer fee between €70 million and €80 million.

In contrast, Barcelona are hoping to secure a significantly lower initial package of around €50 million plus add-ons, while also heavily considering player-plus-cash swap deals that could potentially involve forwards like Ferran Torres.

Crucially, before any official bid can be formally lodged and accepted, the cash-strapped Blaugrana must actively offload some current squad members to generate liquid funds and clear salary cap space, which would help them comply with LALIGA’s strict financial regulations.
