‘They are the second big favourite’ - AFCON winning coach picks between Nigeria and Senegal to win Nations Cup

Le Roy, who has managed national teams including Cameroon, Ghana, and Senegal, believes the Lions of Teranga have the edge over traditional powerhouses like Nigeria. 

The seasoned tactician, who famously led Cameroon to victory over the Super Eagles in the 1988 AFCON final, shared his thoughts on the tournament's top teams.

While Nigeria has secured the continental trophy three times, both Morocco and Senegal have each won it once, in 1976 and 2021, respectively. 

Le Roy sees the current Senegalese squad as a formidable force over the Nigerian national team.

He highlighted this blend of experience and youth as a key reason for his high expectations, placing Senegal ahead of the Super Eagles in the pecking order.

Speaking on Canal+, Le Roy explained his reasoning: "Senegal play well. You only have to look at the stats and before Nigeria, they are the second big favourite behind Morocco for me in this Africa Cup of Nations."

The team is expected to feature a potent mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars. Former Premier League stalwarts Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Édouard Mendy are likely to be joined by promising young talents like Pape Matar Sarr, Ibrahim Mbaye, and Mamadou Sarr.

The Lions of Teranga will begin their campaign in Tangier, where they will play all their group stage matches. 

Their tournament kicks off with a highly anticipated clash against Botswana, followed by a tactical test against the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will conclude the group stage by facing a Benin side managed by Gernot Rohr.
