The decision is correct- Ex-EPL referee Mark Clattenberg on Man Utd's penalty vs Burnley
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has backed the decision to award Manchester United a stoppage-time penalty in their dramatic 3-2 win over Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United, managed by Ruben Amorim, looked set to drop points after two defensive lapses allowed Burnley back into the game. But deep into injury time, Amad Diallo was fouled by Burnley’s Jaidon Antony inside the area.
After play initially continued for around 30 seconds, VAR intervened, leading to a spot-kick.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes converted with confidence, striking low into the bottom corner to seal United’s first win of the Premier League season and ease tension among the home crowd.
What Clattenburg said
Speaking to United in Focus, Clattenburg explained why the penalty was the correct decision, “Holding of the shirt, which starts and carries on inside the penalty area, can be given as a penalty. Jaidon Antony has a hold of Amad’s shirt, and the only question for the VAR was whether Amad had his foot on the line of the penalty area when the hold stopped.
He continued, "I have watched this many times, and the front foot looks like it’s on the line when the shirt is still being held, so therefore a penalty kick is the right outcome.”
The result lifts United to four points from their opening three matches, though it marks the fourth consecutive season they have failed to win at least two of their first three fixtures.
Next up is a daunting Manchester derby at the Etihad, where Amorim’s side will need to step up to avoid being stuck on just four points after four games.
