‘That's why it was different’ - Onyeka explains factor that led to Super Eagles' semi-final loss to Morocco
The Brentford player was a key figure in the match at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, playing the full 120 minutes before being substituted for Samuel Chukwueze in extra time.
The semifinal proved to be Nigeria's most challenging match of the tournament. The Super Eagles struggled to create chances, managing only two shots—one on target—throughout the entire game.
The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout, where Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou became the hero. He saved penalties from Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze, securing a 4-2 shootout victory for the hosts.
Onyeka speaks on semi-final loss
When asked about the deciding factors in the match, Onyeka highlighted Morocco's strategic approach and the performance of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea.
"Tactically, they were very good," Onyeka explained to Oma Sports TV. "They knew what we were going to do and tried to close us down. I think that was the problem in the game."
However, he also pointed to the officiating as a significant influence on the outcome. "But the referee also made it easy for them because, whenever we had our own moments, he tried to cut them off, which killed our momentum and gave the Moroccans the advantage," he added. "That's why it was different. Morocco were very good, I give it to them."
Prior to their semifinal exit, Nigeria had demonstrated strong form against North African teams, securing impressive wins over Tunisia and Algeria. They later defeated Egypt on penalties to win the third-place playoff.
Reflecting on the team's mindset, Onyeka noted their mental and physical strength. "When you're playing against North African countries, you know that we are mentally strong," he said.
"We are also physically strong, but at the same time, we approach every game without thinking about whether it's against a North or West African team."
Onyeka participated in four matches during the 2025 tournament, increasing his total AFCON appearances to twelve across three editions.
