‘That's a pathetic statement’ - Ex-EPL manager launches attack on Carragher for his comment on Salah
The controversy began when Carragher, a former Liverpool captain, suggested that Salah's "legs have gone".
The Egyptian forward was notably dropped from the starting lineup for that match by manager Arne Slot following his poor form.
The attacker was also dropped for the second time in a row in the Reds' 1-1 draw to Sunderland on Wednesday night.
Allardyce slams Carragher
Allardyce, who has managed clubs including Newcastle and West Ham, accused Carragher of making sensationalist statements to boost his own profile.
"He should know better," Allardyce stated on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast. "That's an absolutely pathetic statement, but he's good at them, isn't he? He's good at just throwing it out there for a bit of, you know, 'popularity'."
"That's a disgrace. His legs haven't gone," he continued. "How can his legs go from what he did last year, having the summer off, and then his legs go this year? It doesn't happen overnight."
He also challenged Carragher's authority on the matter, adding, "How does he know anyway? He doesn't train with him, he doesn't watch him train. He sees him play, and he might not be doing so well, but that's like many of the Liverpool players."
Carragher's criticism came during a difficult period for Salah, who has scored five goals and provided three assists in 18 appearances this season, a tally below his usual high standards.
