Shocker! Neymar hints at early retirement with 2026 World Cup just months away
Brazilian superstar Neymar has suggested he could call time on his glittering, but injury-filled career at the end of 2026.
The 34-year-old forward, who currently plays for his boyhood club Santos in Brazil, made the surprising admission in a recent interview.
After a decorated career in Europe with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar returned to his homeland in January 2025 following a brief, injury-plagued spell with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
Neymar to quit football after 2026 World Cup?
Speaking to Brazilian channel Caze (via The Standard), Neymar revealed his uncertainty about continuing his career beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of 2026.
"I don't know what will happen from now on, I don't know about next year," Neymar stated. "It may be that when December comes, I'll want to retire. I'm living year to year now."
He added, "This year is a very important year, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team, as it's a World Cup year, and for me too.”
Neymar first rose to prominence at Santos before a high-profile transfer to Barcelona. There, he formed a formidable attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, winning two La Liga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League. In 2017, he became the world's most expensive player when PSG paid a record-breaking £200 million for his services.
During his time in Paris, Neymar scored 118 goals in 173 appearances, securing five Ligue 1 titles and reaching the 2019-20 Champions League final. As Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, his focus remains on the upcoming World Cup.
The forward's career has been hampered by injuries, including a knee surgery last December. He made his return to the pitch last week, appearing as a substitute in Santos' 6-0 cup victory over Velo Clube.
