Messi had already dominated the evening, setting up the opener for Julian Alvarez, before adding the second of the night to reach a staggering 116 international goals.
When Thiago Almada was fouled in the box, the stadium rose to see Messi take the spot-kick. Instead, the captain calmly handed the ball to Otamendi, stepping aside to let the defender have his moment of glory.
The scene sparked an emotional reaction from the players and fans alike, with Otamendi appearing visibly moved as the squad swarmed him.
Throughout the night, the La Bombonera faithful chanted Messi’s name in what felt like a heartfelt "Thank You" to the man who delivered the 2022 World Cup.
In a career defined by 900+ goals and endless silverware, Messi’s greatest legacy may well be his selflessness.
The former Barcelona man has routinely passed up goalscoring opportunities to set up teammates, as well as handing out penalties to the likes of Neymar, Luis Suarez, and others.
As the "Golden Generation" prepares for their final stand in 2026, this last gift at home will l be remembered as the perfect closing chapter to Messi and Otamendi's time in front of home support.
