Former Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has named Morocco among his surprise contenders to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The retired midfield maestro believes the African giants have evolved enough technically and tactically to challenge football’s traditional powerhouses on the biggest stage.

Kroos names Morocco among World Cup contenders

With the 2026 World Cup set to be hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19, excitement is already building over who will lift the trophy.

Speaking on Brazilian legend Romario’s YouTube channel, Kroos revealed his shortlist of five teams he believes could win the tournament, and Morocco’s inclusion raised eyebrows.

“Spain, Portugal, and France. Morocco could be a surprise because technically they have improved a lot in recent years,” Kroos said.

Notably, the former Los Blancos star left out reigning champions Argentina and five-time winners Brazil, adding humorously: “Germany and Brazil are not in the top 5. Sorry (to Romario) for not saying Brazil, but if they win it, it’s worth it.”

Atlas Lions’ rise fuels World Cup belief

Morocco’s reputation soared at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they became the first African nation to reach the semifinals, eventually finishing fourth behind Argentina, France and Croatia.

That historic run cemented their status as a global force rather than just contenders for titles on the African continent.

The Atlas Lions are currently ranked first in Africa on the FIFA rankings and sit just outside the world’s top 10. They have also been drawn into Group C of the 2026 World Cup alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, who are making their first appearance since 1976.

As hosts of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco are widely tipped as favourites to lift the continental crown. With home advantage, elite stars, and growing belief from respected figures like Kroos, the Atlas Lions’ World Cup dream no longer feels far-fetched.
