Newcastle vs Chelsea: How it happened

Newcastle responded strongly to their Wear-Tyne derby disappointment by racing into an early lead against fellow EFL Cup semi-finalists Chelsea, asserting control from the opening minutes.

Anthony Gordon tested Robert Sánchez inside four minutes, and although the goalkeeper made a fine save, Nick Woltemade reacted quickest to score from the rebound.

The forward, who had struggled for goals, struck again midway through the half, delicately converting Gordon’s inswinging cross after a lengthy VAR check to put the hosts 2–0 up.

Newcastle could have extended their advantage before the break, while Chelsea saw a potential lifeline ruled out when Pedro Neto handled the ball. The momentum shifted dramatically after half-time.

Reece James reignited Chelsea’s belief with a superb free-kick four minutes after the restart, reducing the deficit and sparking sustained pressure.

Chelsea were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah escaped punishment for a challenge on Gordon.

The Blues' resurgence was rewarded in the 66th minute when João Pedro latched onto Sánchez’s long pass and calmly finished past Aaron Ramsdale.

An open, end-to-end finale followed, with chances at both ends, but neither side found a winner. The draw extended Newcastle’s worrying run without a clean sheet, while Chelsea’s improved second half helped them remain fourth despite recent dropped points.
