New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has begun his reign at Stamford Bridge with an off-field issue after being convicted of speeding in the UK.

The ruling will see the former Strasbourg boss pay fines amounting to roughly ₦2 million following a court decision earlier this month.

Rosenior received speeding conviction

Rosenior was found guilty of driving at 36mph in a 30mph zone on Rykneld Road, Littleover, Derbyshire, at 11:41am on 7 July.

The 41-year-old admitted to being behind the wheel and was initially offered the chance to avoid prosecution by completing a speed awareness course. However, he failed to attend the session after travel disruption caused by fog delayed his return flight to the UK.

In a written statement to Derby Magistrates’ Court, Rosenior explained that he had to stay an extra night abroad and was travelling during the scheduled time of the course.

He added that the session could not be rearranged due to unforeseen circumstances and accepted responsibility for the outcome.

As a result, Rosenior was convicted at a single justice procedure hearing on 2 January and ordered to pay a total of £1,052 in fines, costs, and court fees, equivalent to around ₦2 million.

Chelsea appointment confirmed despite setback

The London-born manager signed a six-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2032, becoming Chelsea’s fourth permanent boss since BlueCo took over in 2022.

Rosenior described the move as a major step up, admitting that Chelsea operate on a different level compared to Strasbourg, also owned by BlueCo. Having previously managed Hull City and started his coaching journey at Derby County, he said leading a “world-class” club was a lifelong ambition.

Despite the legal setback, Chelsea have confirmed their backing of the new boss, who now turns full focus to the challenge of restoring success at Stamford Bridge as he begins a defining chapter of his managerial career.
