Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Crystal Palace’s rising midfield star Adam Wharton, with Real Madrid also circling for his signature as both clubs plot their next big midfield addition.
Manchester United had initially targeted Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but with Brighton unwilling to sell, attention has now turned to Wharton, who is rapidly becoming one of English football’s most exciting young talents.
European giants circle as Wharton’s stock rises
At just 21, Adam Wharton has already carved a reputation as a player who thrives under pressure, dictating play with a composure that belies his age.
Since joining the Eagles from Blackburn in January 2024 for a fee of around £22 million, Wharton has been at the heart of the club’s success, helping them win both the FA Cup and the Community Shield.
His performance in the 2025 FA Community Shield, where he assisted Ismaila Sarr’s equaliser against Liverpool, only heightened interest from Europe’s elite.
Real Madrid, in particular, have identified Wharton as a potential long-term replacement in a midfield transitioning after Luka Modrić’s move to AC Milan and Toni Kroos’ retirement.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, alongside rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, have monitored his progress closely, with scouts regularly present at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace’s stance on Wharton transfer
Despite the growing interest, Crystal Palace are determined not to let their prized midfielder leave without a fight.
Wharton remains under contract, and Palace are expected to demand a fee in the region of £60 million should any club push for his signature.
While Wharton has not expressed a desire to leave mid-season, the combination of Madrid’s ambition and United’s urgent need for midfield reinforcements could eventually test Palace’s resolve.
For now, Wharton’s focus stays firmly on his role at Selhurst Park, but a blockbuster transfer feels increasingly inevitable as Europe’s giants prepare their moves.
