Liverpool legend slams Dominik Szoboszlai for 'daft' red card in Man City defeat

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised Dominik Szoboszlai, labeling the midfielder’s second-half red card as stupid and daft.

Szoboszlai had initially been the hero of the afternoon, breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute with a sensational 30-yard free-kick that flew past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

A home win would have boosted Liverpool’s top-four hopes after wins from Manchester United and Chelsea, but Manchester City staged a stunning comeback to win 2-1.

Liverpool crumbled under late pressure, conceding an 84th-minute equalizer to Bernardo Silva before Erling Haaland converted a 93rd-minute penalty to steal the points.

Manchester City thought they had added a third in the last minute, but Rayan Cherki’s long-range goal was disallowed for a foul by Szoboszlai, who was then sent off following a VAR check.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Carragher vented his frustration at the lack of discipline shown by the 25-year-old.

‘It’s a bad one for Liverpool,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘When you look at the league for Liverpool, it looks like a long way to get into the top-five Champions League positions.

‘It’s a stupid decision by Szoboszlai,’

"For me, you just let it carry on, and the goal goes in, and I don’t think anyone’s complaining. It’s absolutely daft from him because he’s got time to think, he was running back.’

The loss leaves Liverpool sixth in the table, four points behind Chelsea in fifth and five behind Manchester United in fourth.

Szoboszlai will now miss Liverpool's game against Sunderland on Wednesday, an even bigger miss as Arne Slot has no fit right-backs in the squad.

For Manchester City, the title chase continues; they will hope to remain close to Arsenal until both teams meet at the Etihad in April.
