Incredible Samuel Ogazi blazes to sub-46s at AFN Golden League in Abuja
The highlights of the AFN Golden League in Abuja witnessed teen sensation Samuel Ogazi dominate the men's 400m events.
Ogazi, in his first competition after announcing himself to the world at the African U18 and U20 Championships in Zambia, where he became the 400m champion in a stunning Personal Best (PB) and Championship Record (CR) of 46.01s, proved in Abuja that his victory in Zambia was no fluke and he is here to stay.
The 17-year-old first ran the fastest time of 46.3s on the first day of the All-Comers meet, then dropped it to an incredible PB of 45.91s on the second day of the Golden League.
His time is the second-fastest by a Nigerian male quarter-miler this year behind Raphael Egbuchilam's 45.79s clocked at the just concluded NCAA West Preliminaries. It is also the fastest on home soil in the past few years.
Nigeria has surely found another star for the future in Ogazi, and he may be the solution to reigniting the spark of the country's dominance in the event at global championships.
Here's Ogazi's progression in his 400m finals this year.
- Nigerian U18 trials, Kaduna (April 2023) - 47.48s
- African U18 Championships, Zambia (May 2023) - 46.01s
- AFN Golden League, Abuja (May 2023) - 45.91s
