The Super Eagles midfielder spent the previous season with Bundesliga side FC Augsburg after finding his opportunities limited under former Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

He quickly established himself in Germany, featuring in 31 of the club's 34 league matches and contributing one assist.

Despite his consistent performances, Onyeka returned to Brentford this summer, as his loan deal did not include an option for a permanent transfer.

A permanent move was also likely hindered by the financial constraints common among many Bundesliga clubs.

Onyeka compares EPL and Bundesliga

Reflecting on his time in Germany, Onyeka described the experience as a crucial period for his professional growth.

He highlighted the distinct physical demands of the Bundesliga, noting the relentless, fast-paced nature of the league compared to the Premier League.

"People often say that in the Bundesliga, players run a lot compared to the Premier League. When I got there, I felt it.

“They always want to go forward with every ball," Onyeka stated, according to Brentford’s official website.

"In the Premier League, teams know when to calm the game, when to move and when to play some passes before going forward; in Germany, teams just want to go forward at every opportunity," he explained. "It suited me really well; I love to go forward and track back. It was good for my game."

This season, the 26-year-old has once again faced challenges securing a regular starting position at the Gtech Community Stadium.

All of his Premier League appearances have been from the bench, with his only starts coming in the EFL Cup.
